In the beginning months of 2025, our union conducted health and safety inspections across multiple DPP offices to identify workplace hazards and improve staff well-being. This newsletter highlights critical findings from each site, recurring safety concerns, and the union’s ongoing commitment to creating safer environments for all community correction workers. From expired first aid supplies to unclear emergency plans and unresolved structural issues, the union is advocating for immediate action and written follow-up to protect our workforce. We were able to travel to the following offices:

Preston Street Office

Frederick Street Office

Gaithersburg Office

Severn Street Office

Essex Office

⚠️ Recurring Themes & Concerns

Throughout the visits, several key concerns consistently emerged:

Outdated or insufficient first aid supplies

Inaccurate or unreadable emergency evacuation signage

Unresolved vehicle maintenance and unclear accountability

Persistent pest, mold, and structural issues

Emergency exits that were inaccessible or poorly marked

Insufficient communication and follow-through from management

Unclear protocols regarding PPE tracking and usage

📣 Union Message

We are committed to ensuring that every worksite is safe, compliant, and supports the physical and mental well-being of staff. During the meeting, the union reiterated that written responses and clear timelines must be provided for each issue raised.

Some progress has been acknowledged verbally, but formal documentation and real action are required to ensure accountability. We will continue pushing for transparent, trackable follow-through and safer conditions across all locations.
